Chevy Volt...The Integration of Car and Technology

The Chevy Volt is getting closer and closer to its public launch date, and so far the Volt's future is looking rather promising. In this latest video from Translogic, Bradley Hasemeyer takes the Volt through a thorough test run to see how the vehicle really performs.

Bradley firsts begins by talking about the features of the car with several of the engineers that have worked to design the Chevy Volt. The highlighted features are the available 240 volt charging station that takes charge time from 10 hours to 4 hours, the integration with smartphones, the impressive braking systems, and the different drive modes that the Volt offers.

One of the great things that seems to surface through this video is just how much Chevrolet has focused on integrating technology into the car. As you watch the video, it should be clear how much technology goes into the vehicle to provide a smooth ride for the people in the car. Bradley hits it right on the head when he says that Chevy is "trying to integrate the car into your lifestyle, instead of you into the lifestyle of the car."

As you watch the video, pay attention to the performance aspects (0-60 time, sport mode, mountain mode), and pay attention to the integration of smartphone technology (it is really neat). Further, notice the comparison with the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius. It is rather impressive to hear that the Chevy Volt has a seemingly better experience than both of those vehicles as well.

Enjoy the video below and to see the whole story head over to Translogic.

Hall of Fame Luncheon

Baseball and Barbeque, two of America's greatest past times, converged today as Tom Gill Chevrolet and the Green Diamond Gallery hosted the Hall of Fame Luncheon at Montgomery Inn. The lucky participants got to enjoy the meeting, hearing from, and talking to the three major league inductees Doug Harvey, Andre Dawson, and Whitey Herzog. Further, the attendees had the pleasure of having Marty Brennamen as the master of ceremonies.

The event began with a quick introduction by Marty Brennamen and followed with speeches from each of the three Hall of Fame inductees. After the speeches, the attendees we able to conduct a question and answer session with Doug Harvey, Andre Dawson, and Whitey Herzog. The question and answer session touched on topics such as how best to coach youth baseball teams, how instant reply should be incorporated into baseball, and many stories of the all-stars.

After the question and answer session, Marty invited Tom Gill to the stagein order to present two awards given by the Character and Courage Foundation. Tom Gill Chevrolet was recognized as the main sponsor for the awards given today. Congratulations to Greg Miller for winning the Character award as he showed exceptional moral and ethical strength on and off the baseball field. Also, congratulations to Ashley Freeny for winning the courage award as she showed the quality off mind and spirit that has enabled her to face difficulty both on and off the softball field.

Following the presentation of the awards, Jon Warden (a former baseball player for the Detroit Tigers), was invited to the stage to be the auctioneer for the live auction that took place. While providing a great deal of laughter, Mr. Warden helped raise $7,800 for the Character and Courage Foundation. These funds, along with the funds raised through the silent auction, will work to empower the baseball driven lives of youth who are physically handicapped, diagnosed with life threatening illnesses, or living in impoverished areas.

Overall, the day was a great success in both honoring the 2010 Hall of Fame Inductees Doug Harvey, Andre Dawson, and Whitey Herzog as well as honoring Greg Miller and Ashley Freeny for persevering through the struggles in their lives both on and off the field. Tom Gill Chevrolet is excited and proud to be apart of the efforts being made by the Green Diamond Gallery and Character and Courage Foundation.

The video features the Character Award winner, Greg Miller, and the Courage Award winner, Ashley Freeny.

Also if you haven't noticed, the Chevrolet Volt will have an MSRP of $41,000, but there is also an available $7500 rebate offered by the U.S. government, which would lower the price to $33,5oo. Further, there will be a lease available that starts at $350/month.

A Business of Character

What does it mean to be a "Business of Character"? It is a question many wonder when they walk through the doors of Tom Gill Chevrolet. Oftentimes, when the question is asked to customers or curious people, their response is rather typical: it means to have integrity, to be honest, to follow the golden rule, and to have respect. Yes, all of these typical answers do have a place in being a "Business of Character", a business wouldn't really be one without these elements. Yet, being a "Business of Character" goes beyond just talking about the different character qualities that exist, being a "Business of Character" is about developing each and every employee at Tom Gill Chevrolet to strive to constantly improve.

Tom Gill Chevrolet, in 2001, became a "Business of Character." It was a result of teaming up with the Character Council of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. As a result of this partnership, Tom Gill and his employees chose to start developing their character qualities. The character development was, and still is, based off of a list of 49 character qualities.

Everybody knows that nothing comes easy, and that is why the employees at Tom Gill Chevrolet still strive to improve their character qualities. The improvement happens in many different stages. All new employees must attend a character training session. There, new employees learn what it means to be a "Business of Character' and how this idea will permeate through their employment at Tom Gill Chevrolet. Current employees must attend 4 character "energizer" sessions throughout the year. These sessions are meant to focus the employees' attention on the present state of things at Tom Gill Chevrolet, and it allows employees to take a close look at how well the organization, as a whole, is doing at being a "Business of Character." Further, there is a character trait of the month. This character trait is displayed throughout the dealership to remind employees and customers what the dealership is working on. The signs are displayed to encourage development of that characteristic in every employee at Tom Gill Chevrolet. Also, employees have the ability to be recognized for displaying actions that reflect the character trait of the month. At the end of each month, the employees at Tom Gill Chevrolet, vote on the employee that best displays the month's character trait. Finally, each employee is encouraged to recognize where their strengths and weaknesses exist within the list of the 49 characteristics. Upon identification, employees are asked to improve those that need to be improved, and employees are asked to continue in their strengths and to encourage others to do the same.

According to Tom Gill, the owner of Tom Gill Chevrolet, "many dealerships train their employees 80% of the time on the hard skills, how to fix a car, how to sell a car, how to do a process, but here, at Tom Gill Chevrolet, we spend 80% of our time developing the people, encouraging them to become better people, and encouraging them to develop skills that will allow them to focus on treating fellow employees and customers in the best way possible."

When reading about a "Business of Character," it all sounds nice, it all sounds like a good idea, and it sounds like no business could ever live up to being a "Business of Character." Yet, it has proven over the years to be something great. The idea of being a "Business of Character" has actually produced results, and it has allowed for a better workplace for employees and a more comfortable environment for customers. In fact, on the outset of being a "Business of Character," the employees of Tom Gill Chevrolet were asked to develop a mission statement that they would want to live out in their daily work. The result was: "From our family to yours, your complete satisfaction is our everyday goal." This mission has helped to guide employees over the past nine years and the effects have been great. Employee turnover has decreased by 65%, because employees are treating each other as if each employee were a customer of the dealership. Further, our relationships with customers have improved. Tom Gill Chevrolet has seen increases in customer satisfaction surveys, the number of returning customers is through the roof, and Tom Gill Chevrolet increasingly sees referrals from customers that have had an enjoyable buying experience.

Being a "Business of Character," goes beyond just talking about several different character qualities. Being a "Business of Character" is about developing the employees to be the best people they can be, to build a business that is built on people of character, and to create a business that makes people, employees and customers, feel comfortable and valued as soon as they walk through the doors of Tom Gill Chevrolet.

The 49 Characteristics can be found here

Hydrogen...will it come?

The March, 2010 issue of Motor Trend looked into the current and future developments of GM's hydrogen program. If you have been following the news, GM is winding down their Project Driveway, a campaign that involved the deployment of 119 hydrogen powered Chevy Equinox vehicles. These vehicles were then tested by various people over a span of three years (the program began in 2007). Over those three years, drivers had logged over 1.3 million miles. With the slow down of this project, GM is looking to their next generation, or Gen 2, hydrogen fuel cell.

The Gen 2 fuel cell is lighter, smaller, and uses overall less material than the Gen 1 fuel cell that was featured in Project Driveway. The Gen 2 fuel cell works toward integrating fuel cells into many different vehicles, not just vehicles larger than the Equinox. GM is also focusing their efforts on shrinking their hydrogen storage tanks from three tanks to two to tanks, which will allow for a greater ability to fit hydrogen technology into a wide arrange of vehicles.

The obvious question that comes up is "If GM is developing all this technology when will consumers see it?" According to the article, this technology will hopefully appear around the 2015 model year. Of course, there is a lot that depends on this as well. GM plans to start in urban areas where hydrogen fueling infrastructure can be built. It looks like LA will be one of the first deployment areas, as it presently has some hydrogen infrastructure. However, the key to making hydrogen widespread is having a plan to develop a hydrogen infrastructure across the country, yet the US government has no set agenda or idea on how best to do this as of yet.

The one positive thing is that GM is still focusing on developing this technology and they are focusing bringing the car industry and their vehicles into the future with the most cutting edge technology.

Blood Drive

Well it is the day after the blood drive and it was a great success. Hoxworth drove their big bus out here and we had many employees, customers, and even some walk-ins come in order to help save a life. The Hoxworth blood bus was here from 1pm to 7pm and it stayed busy the whole time it was here. Last year, the Tom Gill Chevrolet blood drive was able to give 16 pints of blood, but there were six people who were ineligible to give, so this year the goal was to surpass 16 pints of blood. At the end of the day, Tom Gill Chevrolet had a total of 20 people attempt to donate, and we gave a total of 17 pints of blood! This means that we saved 51 lives! It is great to see the blood drive continue to grow and prosper.

The blood drive began three years ago, in 2008. It was an initiative started by Tom Gill and an employee, Lindsay Geraghty, who is still proudly employed at the dealership. Lindsay, who is a survivor of Lukemia and alive today because of a blood transfusion, was placed in charge of organizing the blood drive for the dealership. Since the first year, Lindsay has continued to do a great job at organizing and promoting the blood drive here at Tom Gill Chevrolet.

Tom Gill Chevrolet would like to thank everybody that came out yesterday to give blood. Whether you were able to give or not, your support and effort is greatly appreciated. This year was another great success and Tom Gill Chevrolet is proud to be able to support the idea of being a "Business of Character" in order to save the lives of those around us.

Google Maps + OnStar = Synergy

There is some big news for all those OnStar subscribers out there in the world, Google maps now allows a person to have their directions forwarded to their vehicle. It is rather simple, and it is explained in the video below, but this new partnership between OnStar and Google will allow a person to sit at their computer in their house, find directions using Google Maps, have those directions sent to their vehicle, and then be able to access those directions once in the vehicle.

Even better, the directions will be stored in the vehicle, thus making it possible to access older directions at any time. Check out the video below to see a quick overview of how this new feature will work.

Kentucky makes Corvette the official state sports car

In 2007 a bill was introduced to make the Chevrolet Corvette the state sports car of Kentucky. Now, after three years and almost getting turned away, it has been finalized as Governor Steve Brashear signed the bill.

Although the Corvette has such a high popularity and reputation the bill almost did not pass. With the recent troubles in the industry, the bill was almost abolished. However, as the industry is resurrecting itself, the bill was quickly brought back to the surface.

As Bowling Green, Kentucky is home of the Corvette plant, Kentuckians have long considered designating the Corvette as Kentucky's sports car as it would display the state's craftsmanship and pride. Now, it is official, the Chevrolet Corvette has become the icon of sports cars in Kentucky.

The Corvette Grand Sport

It's back! After 14 years without the Corvette Grand Sport Chevrolet has brought it back and has it looking fantastic. The new Grand Sport combines the Corvette's LS3 based power-train, with a unique wide-body styling and racing-bred suspension. The car is built in either a coupe or convertible, containing either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The LS3 6.2 liter engine has an estimated 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque with the standard exhaust system which puts down 0-60 MPH in 4.2 seconds and a quarter mile in 12.6 seconds. However, there is an optional two-mode exhaust system which increases the power ratings to 436 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque which puts down 0-60 MPH in 4.0 seconds flat and a quarter mile in 12.4 seconds.

Along with the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport comes some extra unique highlights. It contains wider wheels and tires with eighteen inch wheels in the front and 19 inch wheels in the rear. The Chevy Volt Phone App

GM and Google have recently teamed up to make science fiction become reality. With the upcoming release of the Chevy Volt, there will also be an Android phone application to go along with the release. The app will allow owners of the Chevrolet Volt to be the hippest people around. An owner will be able to unlock and lock their vehicles with the app, as well as check charges and even possibly locate their vehicle.

The app will work with OnStar and allow for users of Google's Android phones to send directions from their phones to OnStar's voice navigation feature. The idea with the new partnership and new application is to allow for communication between your car and your phone. This communication and synergy can help out in many different ways.

The first way is that there will always be a backup. If you were to lock your keys in the car or leave them, say in the office, when you ran out to grab something, then your phone can be there to help, and it is instant.

Secondly, one of the major features will be able to check the charge of your Chevy Volt. Since the car will be relying on electricity to run, it will always be helpful to know just how much battery is left. If one knows the correct amount of charge still needed, then an owner could charge the vehicle while in the office or they will know that they will have to use some gas in order to get to their next destination. Overall, the information will allow for smarter driving and better knowledge of the vehicles' condition.

One of the greatest features of the application will be the ability to locate your vehicle. One of the greatest possibilities will be able to pinpoint your vehicle within a parking lot. This will allow even better navigation to your car, but if you still wanted to find your car through a noise, then there is no need to pull out your keys, just use your phone. Further, this will allow for better theft protection. The ability to instantly track and locate one's vehicle will mean that your investment will be better protected.

Overall, the application will be able to go through many different changes and hopefully add some awesome features, but for now, you can be sure that everybody will be looking at you when you can pull out your phone and have instant access to your car.
